Gallery Chat Special / A Walk Through King Tut’s Tomb With Howard Carter / Egyptomania

” A Pale Green Mermaid Blog “

In 1923 Howard Carter opened King Tutankhamun’s tomb.  One paper was given the exclusive rights to cover the story. Across the US a fever was created for pictures and stories about the young Egyptian king’s tomb.

Contents bill for The Times advertising the first pictures of the excavation of the tomb of Tutankhamun which were published on January 30, 1923.

The TIMES of London was the sole proprietor of BW photographs, articles and interviews.  Above is a billboard poster announcing the Times  accomplishment.

The silent film industry presented an exotic ideal of egyptian dress in films,

architecture was influenced by the tombs of Egypt particularly the Rosicrucian society,

Why this reminds me of my one and only chance (please excuse my old buzzard drinking at rundown bar diatribe) to climb the pyramid, I’m sure I’ve mentioned this before but I still, STILL can’t believe that I chickened out on this one…this one being, there was a trip to Egypt -$500 dollars that’s right and it included  RT airfare hotel breakfast for one week with a quick climb up one of the pyramids that included  a personal guide, idiot ,I WAS AN IDIOT, to pass that up – anyway this story was brought to the surface by the mention of the Rosicrucian society, as to the fact being that, while on a road trip with a friend to California, trying to drive straight out – asap – we ran across, while on one of our many midnight caffeine drenched hurtles no lees than Elvis Presley’s first home, a tiny white house with a white fence, the only thing  spotlighted  in town at midnight, then the next night round the same time we hit, purely by happenstance as we had no plan except speed, a temple of the Rosicrucian society with a SPHINX just about my size, I’m 5’9!/2″, me being me at midnight – stopped the red Toyota stick we were driving and I climbed up and perched myself face to face with The SPHINX!!!  Or at least a replica of it, I can still feel the stone of its hat underneath my fingertips as I waited for this moment to be caught on film… these things happen in the wee hours, anyway,

Egyptomania still exist today as 3,000 year old images make our hearts race and our eyes widen.

Friday Night Gallery Chat /Conceptual Art And Barbara Kruger’s Messages

” A Pale GreenMermaid Blog “

Hey Guys, let us speak of conceptual art tonight, when I was getting my degree in painting /photography Barbara Kruger was all the rage and one of my favorite conceptual photographers.  That was in 1981.  Her work was sparse in color and elements.  It was the simplicity and directness of her statement that attracted me to her work.

Image from wikipedia
I Shop, Therefore I Am

Does this image make you laugh or think?  What do you think the purpose of art is?  Can it have more than one meaning?

Night! Happy shopping…

Much of Kruger’s graphic work consists of black-and-white photographs with overlaid captions set in white-on-red Futura Bold Oblique. The phrases included in her work are usually declarative, and make common use of such pronouns as “you”, “I”, “we”, and “they”. The juxtaposition of Kruger’s imagery with text containing criticism of sexism and the circulation of power within cultures is a recurring motif in the work. In The text in her work of the 1980s includes such phrases as “Your comfort is my silence” (1981), “you invest in the divinity of the masterpiece” (1982), and “I shop therefore I am” (1987).

She has said that “I work with pictures and words because they have the ability to determine who we are and who we aren’t.”  FROM WIKIPEDIA

Conceptual art is art in which the concept(s) or idea(s) involved in the work take precedence over traditional aesthetic and material concerns.

My Chakras

My chakras are in recharge mode.

My chakras are resting in their self-made abode,

My chakras have been carrying a heavy load,

My chakras are waiting to bloom again…

Thanks for reading this poem!

FROM WIKIPEDIA , Below chakra info, Thanks wiki!

The Seven Major Chakras

Tantric chakras

Tantrai s a religious, philosophical and magical movement in Hinduism

 Sahasrara: The Crown Chakra

Sahasrara is generally considered to be the chakra of pure consciousness. Its role may be envisioned somewhat similarly to that of the pituitary gland, which secretes hormones to communicate to the rest of the endocrine system and also connects to the central nervous system via the hypothalamus. The thalamus is thought to have a key role in the physical basis of consciousness. Symbolized by a lotus with one thousand petals, it is located at the crown of the head. Sahasrara is represented by the colour violet and it involves such issues as inner wisdom and the death of the body. Sahasrara’s inner aspect deals with the release of karma, physical action with meditation, mental action with universal consciousness and unity, and emotional action with “benignness”.[24]

 Ajna: The Brow Chakra

Ajna (along with Bindu, is also known as the third eye chakra) is linked to the pineal gland which may inform a model of its envisioning. The pineal gland is a light sensitive gland that produces the hormone melatonin which regulates sleep and waking up. Ajna is symbolised by a lotus with two petals, and corresponds to the colour white, indigo or deep blue. Ajna’s key issues involve balancing the higher & lower selves and trusting inner guidance. Ajna’s inner aspect relates to the access of intuition. Emotionally, Ajna deals with clarity on an intuitive level.[25](Note: some opine that the pineal and pituitary glands should be exchanged in their relationship to the Crown and Brow chakras, based on the description in Arthur Avalon’s book on kundalini called Serpent Power or empirical research.)

 Vishuddha: The Throat Chakra

Vishuddha (also Vishuddhi) may be understood as relating to communication and growth through expression. This chakra is paralleled to the thyroid, a gland that is also in the throat and which produces thyroid hormone, responsible for growth and maturation. Symbolised by a lotus with sixteen petals. Vishudda is characterized by the color light or pale blue, or turquoise. It governs such issues as self-expression and communication, as discussed above. Physically, Vishuddha governs communication, emotionally it governs independence, mentally it governs fluent thought, and spiritually, it governs a sense of security.[26]

 Anahata: The Heart Chakra

Anahata, or Anahata-puri, or padma-sundara is related to the thymus, located in the chest. The thymus is an element of the immune system as well as being part of the endocrine system. It is the site of maturation of the T cells responsible for fending off disease and may be adversely affected by stress. Anahata is symbolised by a lotus flower with twelve petals. (See also heartmind). Anahata is related to the colours green or pink. Key issues involving Anahata involve complex emotions, compassion, tenderness, unconditional love, equilibrium, rejection and well being. Physically Anahata governs circulation, emotionally it governs unconditional love for the self and others, mentally it governs passion, and spiritually it governs devotion.[27]

 Manipura: The Solar Plexus Chakra

Manipura or manipuraka is related to the metabolic and digestive systems. Manipura is believed to correspond to Islets of Langerhans,[28] which are groups of cells in the pancreas, as well as the outer adrenal glands and the adrenal cortex. These play a valuable role in digestion, the conversion of food matter into energy for the body. Symbolised by a lotus with ten petals. The colour that corresponds to Manipura is yellow. Key issues governed by Manipura are issues of personal power, fear, anxiety, opinion-formation, introversion, and transition from simple or base emotions to complex. Physically, Manipura governs digestion, mentally it governs personal power, emotionally it governs expansiveness, and spiritually, all matters of growth.[29]

 Svadisthana: The Sacral Chakra

Swadhisthana, Svadisthana or adhishthana is located in the sacrum (hence the name) and is considered to correspond to the testes or the ovaries that produce the various sex hormones involved in the reproductive cycle. Svadisthana is also considered to be related to, more generally, the genitourinary system and the adrenals. The Sacral Chakra is symbolized by a lotus with six petals, and corresponds to the colour orange. The key issues involving Svadisthana are relationships, violence, addictions, basic emotional needs, and pleasure. Physically, Svadisthana governs reproduction, mentally it governs creativity, emotionally it governs joy, and spiritually it governs enthusiasm.[30]

 Muladhara: The Base Chakra

Muladhara or root chakra is related to instinct, security, survival and also to basic human potentiality. This centre is located in the region between the genitals and the anus. Although no endocrine organ is placed here, it is said to relate to the gonads and the adrenal medulla, responsible for the fight and flight response when survival is under threat. There is a muscle located in this region that controls ejaculation in the sexual act of the human male. A parallel is charted between the sperm cell and the ovum where the genetic code lies coiled and the kundalini. Muladhara is symbolized by a lotus with four petals and the colour red. Key issues involve sexuality, lust and obsession. Physically, Muladhara governs sexuality, mentally it governs stability, emotionally it governs sensuality, and spiritually it governs a sense of security.[31]Woodroffe also describes 7 head chakras (including Ajna and Sahasrara) in his other Indian text sources. Lowest to highest they are: Talu/Talana/Lalana, Ajna, Manas, Soma, Brahmarandra, Sri (inside Sahasrara), Sahasrara.

Empowerment Tip For The Week / No- Blues Forum

“A Pale Green Mermaids Blog”

Got the blues or  heading into a serious depression well friends try this:

Make up a tape of your fav songs not just ones you like but ones that make you sing out loud and dance ( or at least attempt to, I speak from experience although I think I do cut a pretty good rug, now umm,…where was I?)

And go for a walk or bike ride in the am, this will set the tone for the day- try it you’ll like it.  And it does work.

Here are a few musical leads ,

My current tape has,

“Needle in a Haystack ”  The Velvettes

“Carmen ”  From  Bizet’s opera

Michael Jcakson reggae mix of  “One more chance “

Levon Helm (Of The Band) ” Only Halfway Home”

Firewater “Borneo”

“La Vie En Rose ” Grace Jones version

Kings of Leon  “Use Somebody”

“Delta Lady”  Leon Russell

“You Got Me Smiling(Again)” Sly and The Family Stone

Peter Gabriel  “In Your Eyes”

“Some Kinda Wonderful” Sam and Dave

 “Thirty One Today” Aimee Mann

“Rockabilly Silly” Not sure who sings it is a great song

and so on and so forth-it is a long tape!

(Thanks to Tony Robbins for the seed idea for this tip, Thanks Tony)

Don’t worry about the neighbor’s stare when you dance across the church parking lot on your walk, one way to avoid this is  to leave at  5 am, as I do, kinda quiet then!

A fav – the definitive I don’t give a Hoot song / LIFE DURING WAR TIME ( this ain’t no party, this ain’t no disco, this ain’t no foolin’ around – Aprapos to these times for some of us)

Heard of a van that is loaded with weapons
packed up and ready to go
Heard of some gravesites, out by the highway
a place where nobody knows
The sound of gunfire, off in the distance
I’m getting used to it now
Lived in a brownstone, lived in the ghetto
I’ve lived all over this town

This ain’t no party, this ain’t no disco
this ain’t no fooling around
No time for dancing, or lovey dovey
I ain’t got time for that now

Transmit the message, to the receiver
hope for an answer some day
I got three passports, couple of visas
don’t even know my real name
High on a hillside, trucks are loading
everything’s ready to roll
I sleep in the daytime, I work in the nightime
I might not ever get home

This ain’t no party, this ain’t no disco
this ain’t no fooling around
This ain’t no mudd club, or C. B. G. B.
I ain’t got time for that now

Heard about Houston? Heard about Detroit?
Heard about Pittsburgh, PA?
You oughta know not to stand by the window
somebody might see you up there
I got some groceries, some peanut butter
to last a couple of days
But I ain’t got no speakers
ain’t got no headphones
ain’t got no records to play

Why stay in college? Why go to night school?
Gonna be different this time?
Can’t write a letter, can’t send a postcard
I can’t write nothing at all
This ain’t no party, this ain’t no disco
this ain’t no fooling around
I’d love you hold you, I’d like to kiss you
I ain’t got no time for that now

Trouble in transit, got through the roadblock
we blended in with the crowd
We got computers, we’re tapping phone lines
I know that ain’t allowed
We dress like students, we dress like housewives
or in a suit and a tie
I changed my hairstyle so many times now
don’t know what I look like!
You make me shiver, I feel so tender
we make a pretty good team
Don’t get exhausted, I’ll do some driving
you ought to get you some sleep
Get you instructions, follow directions
then you should change your address
Maybe tomorrow, maybe the next day
whatever you think is best
Burned all my notebooks, what good are notebooks?
They won’t help me survive
My chest is aching, burns like a furnace
the burning keeps me alive
Try to stay healthy, physical fitness
don’t want to catch no disease
Try to be careful, don’t take no chances
you better watch what you say

The definitive  relationship song/ GIRLFRIEND IS BETTER – don’t forget Flippy Floppy

 I . . . Who took the money?
Who took the money away?
I . . . It’s always show time
Here at the edge of the stage
And I, I, I, wake up and wonder
What was the place, what was the name?
We wanna wait, but here we go again…

I . . . takes over slowly
But doesn’t last very long
And I, I, I, no need to worry
Everything’s under control
O – U – T But no hard feelings
What do you know? Take you away
We’re being taken for a ride again
I got a girlfriend that’s better than that
She has the smoke in her eyes
She’s moving up, going right through my heart
She’s gonna give me surprise
Better than this, know that It’s right
I think you can if you like
I got a girlfriend with bows in her hair
And nothing is better than that (Is it?)

Down, down in the basement
We hear the sound of machines
And I, I, I, I’m driving in circles
Come to my senses sometimes
Why, why, why, why start it over?
Nothing was lost, everything’s free
I don’t care how impossible it seems

Somebody calls you but you cannot hear
Get closer to be far away
Only one look and that’s all that it takes
Maybe that’s all that we need
All that it takes, all that it takes
All that it takes, all it takes
I got a girlfriend that’s better than that
And she goes wherever she likes. (there she goes…)

I got a girlfriend that’s better than that
Now everyone’s getting involved
As we get older and stop making sense
You won’t find her waiting long
Stop making sense, stop making sense…stop making sense, making sense
I got a girlfriend that’s better than that
And nothing is better that this
(Oh is it? )

Now next up is Bob Marley, another  WOW!

Take me to the river, drop me in the water ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh  Talking Heads now that’s a band!

PEACE  (Listen to it )

Friday Night Flash Story Slam

Tonight a Flash Story Slam,

 listen…I have a story to tell…

Laughing Out Loud (Weary Angels Carousel)

Zena walked from the hot sand and hopped briskly onto the spinning carousel almost grabbing the brass ring. It was flashing purple, green and silver lights, but held no children screaming with glee, in fact no one was riding at all. Still, she enjoyed watching it creak up to speed and turn so fast that it lifted off the ground, for seconds at a time.

Onboard cleverly carved horses. crocodiles, tigers, hippos and seven mermaids their tails embedded with semi-precious stones kept their places. It was the last of its kind she thought pushing the engine harder. The red ribbons tied on the entry handles snapped in the breeze. Round and round and round it went, she wished, in her heart, it would never stop. All she had to do was slow the gears, and step off to end it.

The smell of hot dogs slathered with relish and mustard, salty sea air and sweet blue cotton candy wafted over her shoulders enveloping her in a caress of memories.

The carousel was bought and sold, lock – stock – and barrel, something so primal, so intrinsic to her, like breathing had been sold-out. For cold , hard cash. The romance, the friendship and fun of the experience all forgotten – sucked dry of meaning.

Zena built the carousel with her own tools thirty four years ago, painstakingly carving each figure and carefully painting every feather, scale and eye using the purest pigments. Her partner, never understanding the true meaning of what this work of art was emblematic of, exploited her, tricked her and sold the enterprise to the highest bidder . She infused her spirit into it, her heart and soul – he looked for ways to profit, to feed his ego, his need for power. Greed in its clearest form.

“The opposite of true blue love.” She thought.

Well if this was to be the last ride for her treasured carousel it would not be her who shut off the power – let him cast the final blow. She adjusted her dusty green bathing suit and slipped on her Baja peach flip flops then braced her body against the the hippo that enclosed the gear shifter. She jammed the merry–go–round power stick pulling it forward until the top broke off in her hand, she tossed it into the sky. The spinning roared its approval.

Moving carefully to the next animal she leaned herself against the sleek figures taking solace in their beauty. She ran her hands over the textures of the soft painted wood. Dusk was falling as she gingerly made her way to the edge of the carousel when she looked back the figures seem to come alive – eyes gleamed and when she touched the tiger she swore she could feel the fur. It’s the dizziness, she was feeling in her head she convinced herself. All she could see was a blur of colors.

Jumping off, her body was thrown up into the sky disappearing into the stars she felt like she was flying. Her spirit drifted up.

Abruptly her feet hit the warm wet sand beneath the surf. She fell back. Her hands digging deep into the sand felt something cool she opened her palm and there was the golden ring flowing white ribbons over her wrist. The corner of her eyes caught the moon as it rose over the breaking waves. She looked back at the carousel.

It was dark and silent lying tilted on the boardwalk. The glow of the moon warmed her cheek. She glanced up and watched as nine horses, three tigers, two hippos, five crocodiles, and seven mermaids with jewel encrusted tails danced beyond the horizon.

Zena smiled then laughed out loud.

The End
