Well the dirty deed is done. The Spectrum’s days are over.
By all accounts Eddie Vedder/Pearl Jam produced an excellent send-off for the Spectrum including an acoustic star spangeled banner as the last song. Bravo!
I saw my first rock show there, it was Alice Cooper and I loved his music but he was doing something strange with a manequin on stage for a while - strange to my thirteen year old eyes!
They let us in as if it were at country fair, through the turnstile where they took our tickets $3.oo!!! and when the show started you never saw any staff again. Yet no one shoved to get close , those who wanted to did, lots of dancing in the aisle and clapping for the interesting parts of the show, no beer no food ( no groupies either! at least I never saw any)… in the beginning everyone was there for the music.
Then as the corporations realized they could make money off the music things became stricter rules tighter as they worked to maximize profits diminishing the audiences/musician participation and enjoyment…I remember attending a concert after taking a break from concerts in 1981 and they were shining flash lights on anyone who stood up…well, not my idea of fun.
So here’s to the early days of rock and roll, the spirit, the fun, the camaraderie of experiencing not a rock GOD that looms above the audience – but to the days of mutual creation and fascination with the tender tendrils that form between an audience and the musicians performing.
What the hell is a rock god anyway?? after all it is just a guy with a guitar/instrument on stage. I don’t get it…
Goodbye Spectrum! you served us well
